چکیده

Prosodic Theory and, in particular, the Strict Layer Hypothesis (SLH), maintain that each level of the prosodic hierarchy is fully contained within the level dominating it (Nespor and Vogel 1986; Selkirk 1995). However, in some languages a syllable is not necessarily contained within a single Prosodic Word (PW). In this paper, we investigate two such cases of violation of the SLH, and offer a new analysis of the facts. First, we examine data involving the prosodization of Romance “free” clitics, or clitics that are incorporated into prosodic structure at the level of the Phonological Phrase (PP) (Selkirk 1995). The northern Italian dialect of Donceto has free subject clitic pronouns. As we can see in (1) within Donceto clitic + host units, the syllable boundaries are clear: there is a single syllable in each case.

The Acoustic Realization of Prosodic Prominence in Polish: Word-level Stress and Phrase-level Accent

The current study addresses the question of how word-level (“stress”) and phraseor sentence-level prominence (“accent”) is realized in Polish. For this purpose, a production experiment eliciting semi-spontaneous utterances was conducted, closely following the methodological approach introduced in [1]. Our acoustic analyses are based on identical target syllables which are embedded in sentences ...

Phonetic evidence for clitic-host relations within the prepositional group in Russian

The paper presents a corpus-based research on clitic-host relations within the prepositional group in Russian. As a phonetic criterion for determining the relation between clitics and their hosts, we suggest using the degree of vowel reduction— the phenomenon functioning within the prosodic word. A comparison of vowel reduction patterns for clitic group vs prosodic word with no adjacent clitics...

Abstract: This research has been carried out in the framework of Auto segmental-metrical (AM) phonology to study the stress in Persian. Two types of abstract and concrete prominences were distinguished in which the first one refers to the stress and the second one refers to the pitch accent. Stress is assumed to be a lexical property of the lexemes, but pitch accent is assumed to be an intonati...

Domain-final lengthening and foot-level shortening in spoken English.

The literature describes two kinds of durational influence on the syllables of an utterance. They are a lengthening of syllables before many syntactic boundaries ('domain-final lengthening') and a shortening of stressed syllables followed by unstressed syllables ('foot-level shortening'). In the present study we examined the relationship between these two timing phenomena. In particular, we exa...

Significance of word-terminal syllables for prediction of phrase breaks in text-to-speech systems for Indian languages

Phrase break prediction is very important for speech synthesis. Traditional methods of phrase break prediction have used linguistic resources like part-of-speech (POS) sequence information for modeling these breaks. In the context of Indian languages, we propose to look at syllable level features and explore the use of word-terminal syllables to model phrase breaks. We hypothesize that these te...
